1 NOTE: This probably will not work anymore since lots of people have stated this.

2 NOTE: The thread has been updated by S_h_a_r_k_93 with the three default video settings that the game creates. Feel free to change "VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale" to 1 in the Low and Medium settings, if (in the game) you want to see as far as the game allows you to see. If you still have the Debug Assertion Failed issue (especially "Unknown DynamicOption value ####x###@##Hz" or "Unknown DynamicOption value 8Samples" errors), you can find plenty of help in the second half of this post.
So, this has been an error for me, as well as a few others, now it can be easily fixed, just be editing a file, or by using a program. Now if gotten information that you may be able to fix this with the DIESoft Applicaties, written by Air-Zen;

So use these options (manual) down below if the DIESoft applications does not work for you; otherwise, you'll can use the DIESoft applications;

it's thread is found here: http://battlelog.co/post.php?id=8244, and if that doesn't work for you, you can always look on it's wiki page here: http://battlelog.co/wiki.php?article=6

I say again; if the DIESoft applications does not work follow the steps down below (it's manual).

Now lets follow these steps (manual)

- Go to your Documents\Battlefield 2 folder

On Windows XP the default folder is:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Documents\Battlefield 2\

On Windows Vista/7/8/10 the default folder is:

C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Battlefield 2\

- Next go to the "Profiles" folder and then in your profiles map, e.g. : Battlefield 2\Profiles\001

Now in that folder you'll see a few .con files; what you are going to edit is just the Video.con file.

So let's do this, right click on the Video.con file and open with any text editor you have (but absolutely NOT Miscrosoft Word, use NotePad).

You'll see a bunch of text and settings, now what you want to do is delete everything in there and replace it with one of the following default settings (based on the fact that you have a performing Computer / Video Card or not).

THEN REPEAT THE STEPS FOR EVERY PROFILE FOLDER, OTHERWISE YOUR GAME WILL CRASH AGAIN WHEN YOU LOG IN INTO A DIFFERENT PROFILE.

FINALLY DO THE SAME FOR THE VIDEO.CON FILE IN THE "DEFAULT" FOLDER, OTHERWISE YOUR GAME WILL CRASH IF YOU DO NOT START IT FROM THE REVIVE LAUNCHER: C:\Users\%username\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default

Low quality - Default Video Options. Select with the mouse or > DOWNLOAD < and overwrite (rembemer to rename the downloaded file to "Video.con").
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 1

VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 1

VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 1

VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 0

VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 0

VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 1

VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 2

VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 1

VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off

VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 0.75

VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 0

Medium quality - Default Video Options. Select with the mouse or > DOWNLOAD < and overwrite (rembemer to rename the downloaded file to "Video.con").
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 2

VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 2

VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2

VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 2

VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 2

VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 2

VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3

VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 2

VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off

VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 0.9

VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 1

High quality - Default Video Options. Select with the mouse or > DOWNLOAD < and overwrite (rembemer to rename the downloaded file to "Video.con").
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 3

VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 3

VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2

VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3

VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3

VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3

VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3

VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 3

VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off

VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1

VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 2

This will set your settings back to basic (Low, Medium, or High default settings), now you save the file and restart the launcher and game.

Now you should be able to start the game; either after doing the DIESoft or the manual way.
